So, I have felt the need to break up this decade.  There were just too many clippings, it was way too long with just two years.  Here, we pick up with 1985.

California winemaker John Parducci

Spokane Chronicle, 1985

California winemaker John Parducci, often called the father of Mendocino Wine Country, visited the Northwest recently as guest of honor at a barrel tasting at Spokane's Patsy Clark's mansion.
An old-fashioned craftsman, Parducci is leery of wine writers ("they've been giving consumers the wrong impression of wines, they don't writ about the wines that people drink ....") and critical of restaurant wine lists ("They're almost all too expensive ....").

Law protecting historic places out of hand?

Schmeltzer, Law protecting historic places out of hand? 1985

When an ordinance establishing a city/county Landmarks Commission and a Spokane Register of Historic Places was enacted in 1981, preservationists breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Born from the long-running hassle over conversion of the turn-of-the-century Patrick Clark mansion in Browne's Addition into Patsy Clark's restaurant, the ordinance was intended to help shield Spokane's aging architectural gems from the wrecking ball.
Four years later, preservationists, city planners and others are wondering what went wrong.
"Unfortunately, some property owners seem to look at this ordinance as a back door to spot zoning," says Scott Brooks-Miller, city/county historic preservation officer.
The zoning clause was intended to be [used] only when ... reuse appeared to be the only alternative to demolition -- and then only when the building itself was judged to be especially important to the community: The Clark Mansion, for example ....

A Proud Heritage

Schmeltzer, A Proud Heritage, 1985
Schmeltzer, A Proud Heritage, 1985

This article, which I have truncated, is about four of the descendants of Spokane pioneers.  I have highlighted the parts about Clark Richards, the grandson of Ella Theresa Clark Richards.  I think the article is wrong when it talks about how on his mother's side he can trace to pioneer Patsy Clark, and on his father's side he can trace to another pioneer, Henry Moore Richards, the first president of Spokane's Washington Water Power Co.  I think it should have read Grandmother and Grandfather.
Richards says he has no real interest in his family's role in Spokane's history.  He also says regardless of where his family had settled, he would probably still be in Spokane.  "It's a hassle-free city -- a very pleasant place to live," he says.  "A city like Seattle offers more culturally, but along with that you get more traffic, more crime, more problems in just going about your everyday life."

Spokane and Northwest mining industry grow up together

Spokane Chronicle, Spokane and Northwest Mining Industry 1985

This article makes the analogy of siblings.  "The city of Spokane and the Northwest mining industry share many childhood memories.  Besides being next door neighbors, Spokane and mining in this region were 'born and raised' during the same time period."
I love this rhetoric!
Spokane was the jumping-off for most prospectors, where they bought food, clothing, tools, dynamite and other supplies.  Later, entrepreneurs provided mule pack trains and stage coaches.  Later yet, Spokane became the hub of a network of rail lines which carried miners and tradesmen to or near mining camps, then transported their ores and concentrates to mills and smelters.
Spokane continues to be the jumping-off place for prospectors searching for new mineral deposits.  Most of today's prospectors, however, are highly-skilled geologists working out of Spokane-based Northwest exploration offices of some of the nation's largest mining companies.
And while prospectors of the late 1800s traveled on saddle-horses, mules or burros, these modern-day prospectors travel by Jeep, airplane and helicopter into the remote areas of the Northwest, continuing to provide the nation with many of its key raw materials.

Patsy Clark's Presents Singing Pink Scallops

Patsy Clark's, Singing Pink Scallops, 1986

The cold clear waters off the north coast of Vancouver Island nurture a special kind of scallop.  The Singing Pink Scallop.
These delicately flavoured scallops do not live on the ocean floor, so they do not collect sand and grit.  They swim constantly, "puffing" through the water.  These beautiful mollusks appear to be singing as they travel along in schools.
Singing Pink Scallops are hand-harvested year round by commercial divers.  Timing is crucial.  To ensure freshness the scallops are delivered on the day of harvest to our supplier in Bellingham, Washington, then flown live to our restaurant.  Due to this exceptional care they are in peak condition -- tender and juicy -- when they reach our tables.
Our chef has developed three special recipes to enhance the natural flavour of the Singing Ping Scallops.  We think you'll enjoy them, so make your reservation now.
Singing Pink Scallops will only be available at Patsy Clark's from April 4th thru 13th.
Wow!  I just learned a new thing, here!  You are welcome.

So, apparently, Tony Anderson, the co-owner of Patsy Clark's is also a professor and a consultant, and -- if he gets his way -- State Senator for the 6th District.

The Pacific Halibut.
Seafood lovers covet the halibut for its delicate tasting, firm, white meat.  Our chef has chosen these special recipes to enhance the Pacific Halibut's flavour:  1. Broiled with Herb-seasoned oil; 2. Baked or Broiled with Tarragon Butter; 3. Broiled with Raspberry Sauce and served on a Bed of Spinach; and 4. Baked in Cucumber-Dill Sauce.  We think you'll really enjoy these selections

Browne's Addition: An age of beauty, elegance recalled

Powers, 1986

This headline was used once before, but it is still apropos.
With a clear gaze very few others can claim -- because they weren't there -- Katherine Smith Schaaf of Seattle portrays a Browne's Addition most Spokanites never have seen.
Katherine was born in 1899, and will be 87 years old in October 1986
The Octogenarian recaptures childhood in a neighborhood and an era when grace and elegance were the hallmarks.
She describes a beautiful Browne's Addition, beautiful to look at and to live in.
The Patrick Clark mansion (now Patsy Clark's restaurant) was "directly across the park from our home and was designed by Spokane's famous Kirtland K. Cutter, who had been commissioned to create for Clark the most luxurious home in Spokane.
Cutter was Eastern-born of a wealthy family who had sent him to Europe, where he had studied architecture in London, Paris and Rome, as well as studying here in the United States.
Cutter not only designed the building but also all the furnishings, light fixtures, draperies and wall tapestries.
The Clarks' pew at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral was directly in front of ours for many years, and we girls admired the handsome family during our childhood and youth.
Mrs. Clark called on my mother now and then and often told her how much she liked our simple and artistic home, and I think she meant the lack of display and grandeur.
Through a child's eyes, Browne's Addition in the early 1900s formed the universe -- a world of leafy trees, parents who loved you, horses and carriages that trotted in splendor around a beautiful park.
The entire era was so filled with beauty that an elderly woman still remembers it with joy.

Festival promises grand old time

Schmeltzer, Festival promises grand old time, 1986

It's time to start poking around in grandma's attic.
"In the past, we've just had the people working at the festival dress up in the turn-of-the-century costumes ... but this year, we would like to have everyone get into the spirit -- it's a festival celebrating Spokane's past -- and come out in their 1890s best"
There will be music throughout the day, food booths, craft demonstrations, displays of antique musical instruments and quilts, guided walking tours of the neighborhood, rides in an authentic horse-drawn San Francisco taxicab, and tours of the fabulous Patrick Clark mansion -- now home of Patsy Clark's restaurant ....
Today, this festival is part of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (they also own the Campbell House), and goes by the name of Artfest.  Just after Memorial Day, the festival will begin it's 35th festival in 2020.  To find the latest version -- which is May 29, 30, 31 in 2020 -- click the link here.  I think it will transition to the current year.

Patsy Clark's Restaurant 1980s Part 5.2, 1983-1984

Patsy Clark's Restaurant Part 5.2 1980s (1983 - 1984)

So, I have felt the need to break up this decade.  There were just too many clippings, it was way too long with just two years.  Here, we pick up with 1983.

1983

Restaurant became a reality only after confrontation

Tsalaky & Schofield, 1983
90% of Browne's Addition residents are apartment dwellers

Tsalaky & Schofield, 1983
Patsy Clark's restaurant became a reality only after confrontation.
Yet it is a modern development based on the area's lustrous past

Tsalaky & Schofield, 1983

The article starts off with the history of the house, the cost and they type of architectural style.
When a new family moved into the neighborhood, "if they were introduced properly, and if the girls were ladies," they were quickly accepted, [Josephine] Carter explained.
Years passed.  The age of elegance began to fade.  Many of the original homeowners died, and changes began quietly ....
The neighborhood wasn't as clean ....  Property taxes were comparatively high, and many heirs could not afford to maintain the grand houses.  As Spokane grew, the ... district lost prestige.
First, luxury apartments began to permeate the area.  During World War II, many homes were rented by the government and divided into separate units for servicemen.
In 1958, the area was rezoned primarily $-4, which allows up to 40 dwellings per acre.
Besides the crime problem, the area lacks stability and has a transient population attracted by low rents and easy access to downtown.  And there are problems of traffic flow and parking availability.
But the demolition of the nine mansions in 1972 sparked concern among residents.  The designation of the area as a national historic district in 1976 rekindled civic pride.

The community is working to reduce crime, preserve the mansions, and instill neighborhood pride.
The mansions may never be as magnificent as they were during the early days of affluence, but the people of Browne's Addition are determined to preserve a remnant of generations past for generations to come.

A couple of thoughts.  First, I didn't know about the government using homes in this area to subdivide them into apartments.  Also, when you put so many people into a small area, crime increases.

Piano Bars in Action

Maffitt, 1983

Places where the piano is used more to accompany conversation include ... Patsy Clark's, where solo pianists play every night.
Amil Kyseth, a longtime Spokane-area solo pianist who plays at Patsy Clark's on Sundays, ... said all the piano bar performers in town are practicing up on "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen."
Piano bars are not really a place to go to see virtuoso musicianship or inspiring originality.  Instead, you will see how a bunch of old tunes can connect a group of people.  ... many people still like to hear -- and sometimes sing -- "their" songs, and a piano bar is the place to go.

Patsy Clark's Two Star Rating

Vaughan, Patsy Clark's Two Star Rating, 1983

The Author of "Best Places," David Brewster, rates Patsy Clark's with two stars.  The Restaurant is worthy of three stars, but "needs to stand the test of time."  I wonder what their criteria are?
Is there a way to find that publication?  In 1983?  Let's find out.

I can't get into the book online.  I wanted to see the original review.  But I did find one for sale today 24 February 2020 on Amazon, and I found some other useful information if you want to get the 1983 edition yourself.  The publisher is Sasquatch Books (1983), and the ISBN-10 is 0912365013; and the ISBN-13 is 978-0912365015.

Patsy Clark's hosted an annual barrel tasting dinner, where 20 wineries submitted 54 wines.  Food will be matched to the wines, and the chandeliers will be sparkling.  Tickets are $95, worth $235 per ticket.  I don't know about you, but I would not pay over $200!

Parlor Base Heater sold

The Spokesman-Review, 1984

OMG!  Something from the Clark Mansion is being sold!  Wonder how much they got for this?  Wonder what an ornate parlor base heater is.  Let's find out!  Time for an

Intellectual Interlude!
  • We know what a stove is.
    • In this case it is a heater that burns either coal or wood.
  • What is a parlor?
  • What is a parlor heater?
    • That would be a gas, coal or wood burning stove sitting in the parlor to keep it warm.
    • Essentially, it is a free-standing wood or coal stove.
    • WiseGeek explains
      • Popular as a heating source in one of the more formal rooms of the 19th century home.  Usually made of cast iron, the stove tended to be more compact than the larger stoves used in the kitchen and were more formal in design than the casual pot-bellied stove that was found in simpler homes.
  • Ornate refers to any decoration and finials or fancy-ness [I made that word up myself, can you tell?]
  • Let's put it together Ornate [fancy] unusual [one of a kind, typical Clark and Cutter feature] parlor base heater.  The one descriptor we left out is "base."  Let's get to it, then.
  • According to nortcan in answer to a question "What is the difference between base burners and parlor stoves" on coalpail.com --
    • "Usually a parlor stove is a direct draft stove, so lot of heat go out in the chimney.
    • "A base burner is the opposite.  When the gasses exit the stove, they are directed to the back of the stove then toward the base of the stove, usually a chamber below the ash pit.  There the gasses make a u-turn and come back to a rising channel at the back of the stove and up to the exit flue pipe
    • "That long gasses path permits to release the heat from the hot gasses in the house instead of losing that heat out in the chimney.
    • "A damper device permits to go direct draft or base burning mode.

Clark Mansion in Kirtland Cutter article

The Spokesman Review, 1984

This article is primarily about Kirtland Cutter, the architect who designed and built the Clark Mansion, as well as most of downtown Spokane.  After the Great Fire of 1889 "Cutter quit his job at the bank, set up his drawing table and went about the task of rebuilding the devastated city."
Perhaps Car Tours of Washington will write about him in the future.  Plenty on the man for a series in his own right.

Yum Yum Restaurant Fair

Spokane Chronicle, 1984

Once again, Patsy Clark's participates in the Yum Yum Restaurant Fair with their strawberry shortcakes.  Silly name.  I still wonder if it is the ancestor of today's Pig-Out-In-The-Park held every summer in the Riverfront Park in Spokane?  If you know, drop me a line using the contact form on the right, or the message box below.

Annual benefit dinner a sellout

Parsons, Annual benefit dinner a sellout, 1984

This is the fourth annual event to benefit Deaconess Hospital.  Patsy Clark's will contribute Puget Sound snapper topped with dungeness crab, bay shrimp and Drunkard sauce.  Dr. Anthony H. Anderson, owner of Patsy Clark's Restaurant, is honorary chairman for the benefit.

I have to say, what is that snapper piled on with crab and shrimp, and what in the world is Drunkard Sauce  Also, this is the first indication that I've seen that Tony Anderson has a doctorate degree in something.

Rest easy, no Intellectual Interlude this time.  I can't find any real recipe that might go with seafood.  A Google search, here, shows either a Mexican sauce or an Asian sauce used on Thai noodles.

For only $10.95, you can partake of a wonderful traditional repast.  Worth $27.19 today in 2020.  Still pretty good, I'd say.

Bonino, Businesses allowed in Historic Trio, 1984

I don't remember saying this, but I felt at the time, that the Clark Mansion's 1978 conversion would become a Landmark case, one which other cases would point to to bolster their case.  This article proves my conjecture correct.

Luncheon, sale aid neuromuscular center

Parsons, Luncheon, sale aids neuromuscular center, 1984

This article has a weird title, but that was the headline for this.  Rather, it is a set of articles, and one about Patsy Clark's Mansion is in the middle.  It's actually kind of a cool article, sooths the heart of the savage genealogical beast.
The direct descendants of Patsy Clark celebrated a late Thanksgiving dinner at the restaurant.
Marnie Clark Barrett, a granddaughter of Patsy Clark, who now lives in San Carlos, California, arranged the event as a surprise for her sister, Helen Clark Brown ....  A brother of the two women, Henry Clark, Los Angeles California also was in on the surprise, as were eight great-grandchildren, all of whom drove here in a van from the San Francisco Bay area.
The family group had a special dinner in what once was "Grandmother Clark's" bedroom on the second floor, now a dining room for special parties.  The three generations of the family said they were impressed with the dinner and their surroundings for an event they said they all will long remember.  Sue George entertained the group at her home for cocktails prior to the dinner.
Let's see if I can figure out who these names are.  The siblings are all children of James Blaine and Helen Summers Clark
Marnie Clark Barrett -- I have her profile on Ancestry, she died in 2012 in San Carlos, California.  Her Find a Grave memorial can be found here.  The only thing I know abut her is that she married a man named Barrett.  Upon plugging the last name "Barrett" into Ancestry as just a last name, I find several informations.  The US Obituary Collection shows his name as Thomas Barrett, 1911 to 1963.

Helen Clark Brown -- is Helen Summers Clark Brown, 1911 to 1998.  Her husband was Frank V. Brown, and her Find a grave memorial is here.

Henry Thomas Clark 1915-1990.  I don't have a wife nor any Find a Grave information for him.  Dont have much about him at all, except that he lived in California, according to this article.

Sue George -- As far as I know, she may have been a friend of the family.  I don't have anyone with the last name "George" on the Patsy Clark family tree on Ancestry.
