Patrick Clark will visit Mrs Clark's sister, Mrs Marcus Daly

(The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, California, 1915)

Mrs. Marcus Daly of New York, a sister of Mrs. Clark, has taken a house on Figueroa street for two or three months, and will be specially honored, as will Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Clark, Misses Rhea and Katherine Clark, their daughters, and Miss Katherine Clark, a niece, the latter of Spokane.  All these friends formerly lived in Montana, where they formed an intimate circle.
The Patrick Clarks, who are making their headquarters at the Maryland, have gone to the San Diego exposition, but will return on Friday.

Initially, I thought Mary Stack Clark's sister married Marcus Daly, but I have accounted for her sister's marriage.  So, this must be Mrs. J. Ross Clark's sister.  There are too many Clark's in these two paragraphs.

Patsy Clark died

There is quite a lot of information on his Find a Grave memorial page.  For instance, we find his birth and death dates, and his burial at Fairmount Memorial Park.  We find photos of his mansion, and his mausoleum, as well as an obituary from a newspaper.  We can also see the names of his wife, and two of his children, John Francis Clark, and Rhea C Clark Amsden (Lewis, 2011).

Patsy Clark Mausoleum
(Pettit, 2016)

Patsy was 64 years old when he died of a heart attack.  He was first laid to rest in his brother James' mausoleum, until his own $16,000 mausoleum was built right next to it, and he was moved there (Pettit, 2016).

Mary Clark stayed in the mansion for another 11 years untill she died in 1926 (Clouse, 2019), (Boggs, 2004), continuing his philanthropy and charitable gifts.  We should be able to cover this in the next post.  I hope.

This Day in History by Jim Kershner, Spkesman-Review

(Kershner, 2015)

From our archives, 100 years ago
Spokane was mourning the death of mining magnate Patrick Clark, better known as Patsy Clark.
His name remains familiar to today's Spokane residents as the owner of Patsy Clark's Mansion, 2208 W. Second Ave. in Browne's Addition.
Clark died of an apparent heart attack at his mansion.  His obituary said he was born in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day in 1850.  He came to the U.S. at age 20 and found work in the mines of Virginia City, Nevada, and Ophir, Utah.  His "industry and thrift" -- in short supply in mining towns at the time -- attracted the attention of mining tycoon Marcus Daly, and before long Clark was superintendent at Ophir.  Then he went to Butte and became the foreman of Daly's Alice Mine.  He later was put in charge of the Moulton and Anaconda mines.  He also had an interest in the Bullwhacker Mine.
He came to Spokane in 1887 to open the Poorman Mine in the Coeur d'Alene district.  He spent the rest of his life in Spokane, "extending his interests and developing new mining properties" throughout the region.
Clark had been afflicted with heart troubles, but doctors had hoped that his "rugged constitution, acquired by strenuous labor in early mining days," would allow him to shake it off.  However, an attack of the grippe, or flu, proved to be "a dangerous complication."
His heart condition we don't really know about.  It could be an arrythmia like Atrial Fibrillation, or it could be Congestive Heart Failure.  Regardless, getting the grippe (which is influenza, according to the online medical dictionary (Youngson, 2004, 2005)) was the last straw.  Any time someone dies of an infection, he dies of sepsis, according to Sepsis.org.  Patsy Clark died of sepsis.

No Will was left by Patrick Clark

Spokane Chronicle, Spokane Washington, 1915

Letters of administration in the estate of the late Patrick Clark were asked in superior court late Monday afternoon by the widow, Mary R. Clark, who filed a petition declaring that search for a will had failed to reveal the existence of such a document.
The estate is valued at $400,000, the remainder of the property having been distributed among the members of the family prior to Mr. Clark's death, according to Attorney R.W. Nuzum, who filed the petition.
Besides the widow, the heirs are Ella Clark Richards, Rhea Clark and Katherine Clark, daughters, and P.W. Clark, John F. Clark and James B. Clark, sons.  A hearing on the petition will be held July 2.
