Gordon Bonser obituary

Bonser Family, 2010

This young man is indirectly linked to the Patsy Clark Mansion.  He had become such an expert at repairing antiques, that "when the Clark Mansion in Spokane had an ornate chair for the formal dining roomset shatter on the back, they brought it to Gordon to become repaired like new."  That is quite an accomplishment.

Looks like illuminating history doesn't mean lighting up

Clark, Looks like illuminating history doesn't mean lighting up, 2010

So, Doug Clark calls the mining men who lived in Brownes Addition "robber barons."  I wonder why he does so?
"We prefer not to refer to those at the Campbell House as robber barons," said Kim Davis.  "As robber barons went, they were pretty nice people."  The Campbell House is part of the Museum of Arts and Culture.

Clark, Looks like illuminating history doesn't mean lighting up, 2010

Clark goes on to describe what he discovered life was probably like back in the turn of the century -- 1900s to be clear.  While this describes the Campbell house in particular, the descriptions apply to the Clark Mansion, as well.
In the laundry room, servants had to use a wood stove to heat up the heavy hand irons.  One of the Campbell servants could iron 12 shirts per hour.
The kitchen of the Campbell house features a state-of-the-art Majestic cook stove which was able to use both wood and gas.
Doug Clark indicates he played the part of Patsy Clark during a Christmas House tour.  "I was dressed up in an old suit complete with a vest and a gold watch chain and dealt cards to some others who were also portraying historical characters."  I imagine those characters may have been Campbell, John Finch, perhaps James Clark.
He says everything went very well, until he decided to light up his stogie (cigar).  I guess he may have been kicked out?
Now I have that song stuck in my head.

Kershner, This Day in History A5, 2010

Jim Kershner pulls some blast from the past.
The chamber determined that Wallace was in desperate need of money to care for the hundreds of injured firefighters and other victims.  The chamber announced an urgent collection for Wallace.  Several prominent citizens, including ... Patsy Clark, made large donations.  The chamber immediately raised $1,757.
This sum of 1910 money is the equivalent of nearly $50,000.

Full set of Gorham Whiting Louis XV sterling silver flatware

jecgmc8, 2011

Some family member has a full set of silver flatware that Patsy Clark once owned.  And they are selling the set.
Let's find out what this is.
Louis XV was a French King whose furniture style is named after him.  He also persecuted the Huguenots about 1774 (Wikipedia -- Persecution of Huguenots under Louis XV, 2020).  It was just a style, he wasn't involved in the silver set making.
Whiting was a silver maker who merged with Gorham in 1924.  Which is too late for a silver set owned by Patsy Clark (who died in 1915) to have been a Gorham-Whiting product (Wikipedia -- William Dean Whiting, 2020).  I have found a replacement silver set which the seller identifies as Louis XV (Sterling, 1891), by Whiting Division, which means the set could have been a Whiting product (Replacements, Ltd., 2020).

Replacements, Ltd., 2020

Gorham Manufacturing Company is one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling and silverplate (Wikipedia -- Gorham Manufacturing Company, 2020).  As far as I can determine, the silver set could have been a Gorham product.  Below are two ads.

This Day in History

Kershner, This Day in History A5, 2013

This article sounds like the Keystone Kops.
Harry A. Richards, Spokane's "only society policeman," was in the captain's office when he saw a prisoner jump out of a lavatory window and try to escape.
Kershner writes "No, I don't know what a society policeman is, either, but Richards was the son of the Washington Water Power chairman and son-in-law of mining magnate Patsy Clark.  Apparently, Richards was aplainclothes officer who 'wears the star of a special officer.'"
Richards raced from the office, revolver drawn, in pursuit of prisoner Charles Freeman.  Other patrolmen followed, shouting, "Stop him."  Just then, the driver of the police "greyhound" (police auto) was coming along the street and heard the hue and cry.  He jumped out of the car and tackled -- the wrong guy.
He pounced on special officer Richards and began choking him.  During the struggle, Richard's star was exposed, at which point the officer immediately released him.
Society policeman Richards went to the emergency hospital to be treated for neck scratches.

Patsy's Patrimony

I have waited a very long time to get to this article.  I really like these items, and I wish I could see them in person.  I'm sure the photos do not do them justice.

Prager, Patsy's patrimony:  Antiques from mining magnate Clark's days are for sale, 2014

A group of antiques said to have come from the Patsy Clark Mansion are up for sale.  Just in time for his birthday, St. Patrick's Day.
Included are a Tiffany Studios desk set with picture frame and a fabulous French-style clock with matching candelabra.
The items are a glimse of the luxury in the 1898 mansion

Prager, Patsy's patrimony:  Antiques from mining magnate Clark's days are for sale, 2014

Dave Dixon is a great-great-grandson of Clark, is putting the items up for sale.  He wants them to go to someone who would appreciate them rather than having them collect dust at his house.
Great-Great-Grandfather Patsy Clark
Great-Grandparents Harry and Ella Clark Richards
Grandparents John and Rhea Richards Shipley
Dixon said the items were handed down through family, including the Tiffany desk set that was "headed to the garbage," according to family lore.
Research indicates that the desk set, done in gilt bronze and decorated in an American Indian motif, could be worth $10,000 or more.  A picture frame similar to the one included in the Clark set reportedly sold at auction for $5,000.
The eight-piece set also has a letter opener, envelope holder, ink well, stamp holder, small tray, ink blotter and ancor ends for a desk blotter.
Another sale piece is a curious hand-carved table with an uncertain style that could be Moorish or Kashmiri.  The table holds an ornate, hand-hammered copper tray in the middle ... worth $1,500.
Dixon said that when he got the table, it was so damaged that he had to have it restored.  "It was all broke and pretty well destroyed."
Also for sale are three sets of riding spurs, including Fleming silver overlay spurs, and a small Chinese stool.  The stool is valued at $795.
On display, but not for slae, is a Samuel Marti clock that was likely sold through Tiffany with its matching candelabra, all done in the Louis XVI French style.
Dixon's great-grandmother, Ella Clark, was one of Patsy Clark's children

For mining tycoon Patsy Clark, succcess started ....

Clark, 2014
Patsy Clark may have had a superhuman drive to succeed, as evidenced by something he did long before he struck it rich.
The year was 1876.  Clark was laboring in a mine in Utah, when tycoon Marcus Daly told him a job was waiting for him in Butte Montana.  Clark just had to get there.
So Clark started walking, probably with his brother James.  All the way from Utah to Montana.
Clark's great-grandson John Richards visited many of the Patsy Clark points of interest.  All of this information is now in his book "Patsy Clark, Mining Pioneer"  as a prelude to "The Life and Times of Patsy Clark" a full length book in the works.

Clark, 2014

Clark, 2014

Richards believes the fine food and freedom to roam the mansion's luxurious interior created a "fond memory for many customers."
Richards said his late-father, John Sr., lived there for a time, although "he never met Patsy, who died in 1915, the same year he was born."
John Sr. sounds like a character, too.
While living in the landmark, Richards said his dad had a pet rooster named Pete that pretty much had the run of the place.  At least until Wong, the family chef, cooked Pete for dinner.
A popular explanation about the door handles at the mansion were installed extra low to accommodate Patsy's diminutive 5-foot-2 stature.  Later, Richards learned through passport records that Patsy was 5-foot-7.
Another popular story about Patsy is that he fought against Indians in the Battle of Big Hole River.
Nothing, however, supports this other than Clark joining volunteers to help protect Butte, said Richards.  (This coincides with my own online research.  I'm not sure he would have been a fellow to actually fight?)
What kind of guy was Patsy Clark?  Richards thinks he was a good guy.  "He was always described as a very loving man and family oriented."
After Patsy Clark died, the money didn't last long.  Nobody had the financial wizardry he'd had.  "He came off the boat with nothing in his pockets and wound up amassing a vast fortune.  It's an unbelievable story."

Clark, 2014

Okay, this photo looks like Richards has a halo.  The photographer had to know what he was going for!.  Almost looks like a Renaissance image.

The party will begin with Art in the Park, and feature concerts each Thursday.  The celebration will end with a Park Fest with kids' activities and live music.  The event will last from May to September.
Apparently, developers had a practice of creating parks in the middle of their tracts to attract purchasers.

Hecla's Deep Roots

Kramer, 2016

Kramer, 2016

Long article that explains how Hecla got it's start.
In a nod to the wealth that North Idaho's mines brought to Spokane, Kecla Mining Co. celebrated its 125th anniversary at the Browne's Addition mansion of one of its founders.
Amasa Campbell was one of three financial speculators who staked Hecla's first claims.
These were promoters (talking of Campbell, Patsy Clark and John Finch), get-rich-quick guys, and they made it work.  A lot of people got rich.
Hecla is the last of the pioneer silver-lead mining companies that once flourished in the Silver Valley.
While the silver-lead mining created fabulous fortunes and employed many miners, it also created one of the nation's largest Superfund sites.
Hecla Mining is still around, and, as of 2020, is 128 years old.

Electrifying pioneer

Pettit, Electrifying pioneer, 2016
So, it appears Enloe is famous for more than being the first guy to purchase the Clark Mansion.  This is his mausoleum just inside the gates to Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
It is thanks to Eugene Enloe that electricity was brought to many towns in Eastern and Central Washington.  At one time he owned or controlled the systems for 45 towns, and was the builder of hydroelectric power plants in Okanogan County and Canada.
I never knew this shocking information.  Good to know!
His was also a rags-to-riches story, working as farmer, hotel manager, bakery owner which ended up generating $100,000 annual sales.
He got into electricity because his store had troublesom lighting.  He talked Washington Water Power to put in a line, then he took over the contract for managing the electricity.
When asked how he became successful, he had some really wise words:  "No young man will want to listen to my advice.  My formula isn't popular.  It is to work, not only eight hours a day, but 18 hours.  And save your money."
He was president of Idaho Portland Cement Co., the Enloe Electric Co. in Rosalia and the Enloe Investment Co.  He was head of the Spokane Realty Co. and a director at WWP, the Inland Empire Paper Co., Continental Coal Co. and others.
He died in 1945, just a few months after his wife passed away.

Pioneer mines potential of Northwest

Pettit, Pioneer mines potential of Northwest, 2016

Pettit, Pioneer mines potential of Northwest, 2016

Another long article describing the history of Clark the man, and Clark the miner, and Clark the Mansion.
The story of Patrick "Patsy" Clark is broader than just that of a successful mining baron who built a beautiful mansion in Spokane's Browne's Addition.  It's also about an Irish family's immigration to America and, more so, about how two brothers built a fortune and remained close through life and death.
There has been some confusion as to when he was born, but John Richards, Clark's great-grandson, has done extensive research and found official peperwork showing he was born on St Patrick's Day in Belfast, Ireland, in 1851.
I also found that official information, which I included in the Ancestry profile.  Yes, I made a family tree for Patsy Clark.  That's the only way I can keep these characters straight.
Throughout their lives, Patsy and older brother James worked together.  James often took over the running of a mine after Patsy had established it.
"Patsy was definitely a double-A type of person and was the captain of everything," said Richards, author of the book "Patsy Clark, Mining Pioneer," published by the Spokane Corral of Westerners.  He is completing a fuller work, "The Life and Times of Patsy Clark."
Clark had an impressive work ethic, often sent money back to his mother in Ireland, helping bring the rest of his family to America.
Richards writes that once Patsy and James walked all the way from Utah to Montana.  There he met Mary Stack, married her.  Their first daughter, Mary, died in infancy.
I have to say, I thought so.  In his naturalization papers, Patsy wrote that he had three girls.  There may even be another daughter who died early.  According to other researchers, Mary's middle name may be Ignatius, but the only source anyone has is other trees.  That's not really a source, so as far as I am concerned, I don't know.
Patsy Clark experienced violence between union and non-union miners, as well as his lawsuit against Charles Sweeny over mine ownership.  Clark lost that lawsuit.
Clark and Sweeney lived near each other, attended the same Catholic church.  They were both generous to Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral, with Clark donating the altar shipped from Italy, a baptismal fount and stained glass windows.
When Patsy Clark died in 1915 of a heart attack, he was first interred in James' mausoleum until his own could be finished.  Wife Mary joined him in 1948, along with their infant daughter Mary who died in Montana, infant son Thomas, and Clark's mother.
Other family members are also interred there.  There are two drawers that are vacant, and Richards said that someday he and his family and his sister Sharon Livengood and her family will be interred there as well.
Every Memorial Day weekend the interior of the mausoleum is cleaned and they place flowers outside.
All of Clark's siblings, except for one sister in Pennsylvania, are buried at Fairmount.
And so is Sweeny, whose own mausoleum stands just across the road ... facing the Clark family mausoleum.
Clark cannot seem to get away from Chuck Sweeney, even in death.

Prager, Browne's Addition seeks extra historic protections, 2016

This article by Mike Prager discusses the demolishion of one older home, which will be replaced by a 15-unit apartment building.
Personally, cramming so many people in a small area is asking for crime and trouble, in my humble opinion.  But the developers didn't ask me.  In fact, as I started Nursing school in 2000, I didn't know about the historic Browne's Addition.  Rather, I heard all about the seedy side of the area.
Residents are concerned that the historic flavour of their neighborhood west of downtown will be lost.
The historic preservation office has the task of protecting the sense of place in that district.  It is one of the oldest residential areas of the city and historically was a favourite locale for successful business tycoons near the turn of the last century.
Currently, historic buildings cannot be demolished without a plan to replace them.  "Once they come down, they are gone for good."
Asher Ernst, an investor in the corporation that is developing the aprtments and townhouses, said Browne's Addition is destined to evolve with new housing, in large part because the historic large mansions are not marketable in today's society of smaller families and single residents.

Then and Now

The Clark Mansion as it looked about 1900.  Pretty cool!

Tinsley, 2017

The Clark Mansion in 2017.  At this point, it still belongs to the law firm who has put a lot of money into the building to restore it.  This photo looks like it was taken on a typical dreary rainy day.  It looks like there is a porch or railing on the front over the arch, and white paint that wasn't there in 1900?  And, there is at least one tree missing, probably that stolen Japanese Maple worth $2000 when it was forcibly removed from the ground.

Tinsley, 2017

This was one of the first articles I saw, which confused the snot out of me.  Here it says that Patsy Clark died in 1915, and Mrs Clark stayed in the mansion until her death in 1926.  It is true she lived in the home until 1926, but this is when she sold it to Eugene Enloe, and moved into nearby apartments with her son Patrick W. Clark.  Based on John Richards' statements, it is possible the money ran out and Mary Clark couldn't maintain the upkeep on the huge building.
