Another mis-titled snippet.  Oh well, you should be used to it by now, Dear Reader.
Patsy Clark's, Spokane's landmark restaurant, is praised for its decor and wine list, but not particularly for the foot ("the restaurant isn't famous for its entrees") and only gets one star.

This company has a special package deal:  Opera Show, and dinner at restaurant of your choice, including Patsy's.
Is this company still around?  Let's look.
I found a company in the Tri-Cities area -- https://www.celebrity-limousine.info/
I found one in Metarie, Louisiana -- https://www.celebritylimoservice.com/
No company by that name in Spokane.  There are other limo services who either have celebrity drivers, or drive celebrities.  Oh, well.

Patsy's has good wine selection

Vink & Kelly, 1992

Here we find the extensive array of wines at somewhat affordable prices.
The restaurant has about 5,000 bottles on had, one of the largest wine lists in Washington state.
"We showcase Northwest wines, we'll feature gold medal wines, we'll try to get hard-to-find wines."

Patsy's Party

Vink, Patsy's Party, 1992
Vink, Patsy's Party, 1992

This extensive article is quite special, so I will take some extra care, here.  Take note of that silhouetted image.  This is most beautifully done, something I would love to recreate.
Patsy Clark's is only 10 years old, though the stately mansion's turbulent history stretches back to just before the turn of the century, when Patrick Clark commissioned the home.  It stayed in the family until 1926, became a rooming house, museum and the Francis Lester Inn.  It was destined for demolition.
1977 it was purchased by three partners who fought zoning laws to open Patsy Clark's.  The anniversary party will benefit the Spokane Civic Theatre.
It's a place to show off to other people.  It's drawn compliments from people all over the United States, especially the East Coast, about how impressive it was.
But that [a conservative, no-risk menu] is changing....  This restaurant needs to go to the next level.  Chef Fees says "My approach is to know what's available in the current market and bring it in."
Soups are more creative.  Appetizers are wider-ranging.  Asian influences are appearing.
And the special entrees are considerably more diverse....
No changes slated for the building itself.  The article goes into detail about the rooms, the furnishings, describing the solarium, the library, and the original dining room with Monks watching from above.
Ah, there's my answer.  I wondered why Anderson and Quinn would purchase a building with no guarantee they could get the restaurant off the back burner.
The furnishings, ironically, helped save the building.  When its new owners purchased it for $210,00 in 1977, they knew they could sell the Tiffany fixtures and glass for more than the building cost if they didn't succeed in winning approval for the restaurant.

Remember that photo in the newspaper?  The one I love?

HistoricImages, 1992

HistoricImages, 1992

Here is that image from HistoricImages who had it for sale on ebay.  I don't think it sold on Ebay, listed for $20, but the seller ended the listing because it is no longer available.  It would be interesting to see how he got it, what the provenance of the photo was.  And, where is it now?

Reviews demeaning, frivolous

Zyskowski, 1992

In a letter to the editor, Zyskowski feels that writer Vink has more regard for his "cute" or "funny" appraisals and so-called wit than acting on substance and reporting with objective clarity.
She clarifies that he over exaggerated.  His format is demeaning and frivolous rather than informative.  Vink is an utter embarrassment to our community, ....

1993

1993 has very few newspaper articles for the search term "Patsy Clark's."  The search term "Clark Mansion" produced very few hits.  So, then.  This becomes part of the story.

Clark Mansion Price range for dinner

Patsy Clark's, 1994
Patsy Clark's 1994

Yes, it may be a cliche to go to Patsy Clark's Mansion for a romantic evening, but it's a nice cliche.
This restored, turn-of-the century mansion in Browne's Addition has all the trappings for special occasions:  A real live piano player in the foyer, old-fashioned, gracious service, costly furnishings, antique furniture and -- oh, yes -- good food.
The sensation is similar to being invited for dinner at somebody's very expensive, very exclusive club (although there's no dress code, so there's no need to be intimidated if you don't own a tux).
Patsy Clark's menu tends to be conservative -- prime rib, lots of steak and so on -- but the execution is usually good and prices are reasonable -- mostly $13 to $18 -- especially considering the upscale ambiance  There's also the best wine list in Spokane and a sommelier to explain it, if necessary.

Chuck Quinn sold Patsy's to a group of Spokane businessmen, and, within a year, one of the group members, Steven Senescall, bought out his partners and became sole owner (City of Spokane, 2005).

Mother of all Branches

Patsy Clark's 1995

Let's look at the Catalpa Tree for a minute.
According to Wikipedia, the Catalpa (or Catawba) is native to regions of North America, the Caribbean, and East Asia.  Most are deciduous, grow about 40-60 feet tall with spreading branches about 20-40 feet.  They bear large panicles of showy flowers, white to yellow.  In late summer or autumn the fruit appear.  They are long, 8-20 inches long full of small flat seeds with two thin wings each.
The large leaves, dense foliage and shape of the tree make it ideal for wind and rain shelter.  The fruit husks that fall late summer are a nuisance.
The wood is quite soft, but it is a popular wood for turning and for furniture when well seasoned.  Also it is occasionally used as a tonewood in guitars.  The article lists 37 different sub-species of the Catalpa.
The tree is also known as the Indian bean tree and cigar tree.

Christmas of old at Campbell House

Olson, Christmas of old at Campbell House, 1995

This article talks about living history event.  The Campbell House renovation is complete.  Now see what life was like 100 years ago.  The tour starts with Mrs Campbell's calling card as the ticket of admission.  They will see the cooks in the kitchen, maids in the parlour.
Downstairs in the den, the coachman or a maid will offer comments on Mr. Campbell's silver mining ventures and the discussions that are sure to come during the next poker game with his friends Patsy Clark and John Finch.
Looks really great!  Let's go!

Dining in elegance

Staff, Dining in elegance, 1995

After years in the hands of absentee landlords, Patsy Clark's has local ownersship [sic].
The new owners -- Dalen Niles and his son, Tracy, and Steven Senescall -- have ambitious plans to refurbish the landmark restaurant.
The trio plan to reinforce the restaurant's image as Spokane's premier dining establishment while working to attract more lunch traffic and special events such as wedding receptions.
A thought I have is -- I thought Tony Anderson was a local guy with backing and support from Quinn who was based in Seattle?  Anderson certainly made his mark on Spokane.
Another thought is -- what was the rationale for selling a successful Spokane landmark?

New owners bring fresh perspective, brighter out look for restaurant and mansion

Boggs & Anderson, New owners bring fresh perspective, 1995

Reflected in the dining room mirror, the new managers and owners of Patsy Clark's are, from left, Tracy Niles, Steven Senescall and Dalen Niles.

Boggs & Anderson, New owners bring fresh perspective, 1995

The new owners spent 80 hours cleaning the mansion from top to bottom, starting with replacing worn furnishings.  The three new owners plan to restore the Spokane landmark to its original grandeur.
Their company is called J3G -- short for Just Three Guys -- and bought the mansion and restaurant for $1.3 million.
Among the trio's long-term goals are renovating the carriage house behind the mansion from apartments into a banquet hall.  That would allow Patsy's to host more weddings, anniversary parties and other gatherings.
Another plan is to increase public awareness of Patsy's, through advertising and community involvement.
People perceive Patsy's as being a "special occasion restaurant," said Tracy Niles.  They also have plans to convert upstairs staff rooms into an upscale lounge with a piano player
In the short term, they're focusing on renovating, cleaning and restoring.  During a tour of the mansion, Tracy Niles ran his hand over fading curtains and wallpaper.
"We're trying to take each room and focus on it, get it back to the original state."
